Most people learn jazz Guitar because of their love for jazz music. Learning to play the Guitar effortlessly is a major challenge that requires a lot of patience and practice and jazz music, in particular, is even tougher than most people think. One of the reasons for this is that it takes serious practice to master the keys, learn to play all the scales and arpeggios on them so that you can play genuine traditional jazz music that sounds smooth and relaxing.

Unlike other instruments, it takes time to learn to find the notes on your jazz guitar, but once you become proficient in playing the scales and arpeggios you can work by yourself through improvisation, which is the soul of jazz music. The first thing that beginners who learn jazz Guitar are taught is dexterity, with their guitar fingerboard.

Arpeggios & Scales

The starting point for any jazz guitar practice lessons, as your teacher will tell you, is learning to play arpeggios. These are done in augmented, major, minor and diminished ways in three notes or triadic notes. Along the guitar fingerboard, this requires tremendous practice on various keys. Then by inverting the arpeggios the whole process is repeated with all the keys. Arpeggios are the toughest to learn because it takes hours and hours of dedicated practice to learn to skip strings while playing. Great players like Charlie Parker and Coltrane have integrated arpeggios while improvising in their solos.

You also have to practice arpeggios of the four-note chords on the major 7th, m7, m7b5 and diminished form, and then, invert and repeat through all the keys again and again.

While it is important to become expert at playing the major scale on a jazz guitar with the modes, you must also learn the melodic minor, harmonic minor and diminished scales, as this will help you to handle chord progressions easily and smoothly.

Next comes the major scale on which you practice the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th modes in that order. This is how you practice the major harmonic and melodic scales. All of these have seven-note scales and seven modes. When you learn jazz guitar improvisation, you will realize that you can be more creative with improvising on a chord, making it more appealing when you use the notes and not just the root.

Getting Creative

After you get a good grip on the arpeggios and scales, you can play different intervals in each scale. This means when you play jazz guitar improvisations, you will be able to play solos for larger durations. But most guitarists tend to stay away from this practice since it needs really high level playing to be able to skip strings. So they stick to the scales.

Apart from the arpeggios and scales described above, there are five note arpeggios. When it comes to scales, there are eight note bebop scales, chromatic scales and augmented scales. A lot of hard work goes in to get the hang of these and practice them so that your fingers fly over your guitar, making up permutations as you go.

You need to learn to articulate when you learn jazz guitar playing. While mixing notes you must know how to use techniques like hammer-on, slide and pull-off. The quality of your solo will depend on how you play it.

The good news is that the difficulty level in learning to play in one key is the same as every other key on the guitar. There is however, a tendency with people learning jazz guitar, to skip learning the arpeggios and scales in all the keys. They prefer to adhere to major scales, the pentatonic scales and the blues scales. But to be truly outstanding, it is important to be able to mix and match, and experiment with scalar ideas, wide intervals and arpeggios so that you build your own repertoire of solos, giving you your own identity.

Elmer Talbert "Coo Coo"

Born New Orleans New Orleans December 13, 1950 died August 8, 1900-.

What follows is a very brief resume of Elmer Talbert career with thanks "New Orleans Jazz – A family album by Dr. Edmond Souchon and Al rose (Louisiana University Press)"

In 1929, he was with Arnold de pass Dance Orchestra. He took lessons from kid Rena, and sometimes worked with Rena's bass band and Paul Barnes. He was, like many other musicians in New Orleans, part time musician and works earned his living in a laundry. In 1947 he a stroke suffered but good recovered.

Between 1947 and a further stroke in late 1950, his early death he made some remarkable shots with the George Lewis band. 23 November 1949 a party was by Jazz fan herb Otto in the 1111 Bourbon St. place. The complete band George Lewis was there with other musicians and Jazz buffs available. Herb Otto and his friend Bob Greenwood both had recording machines and much of the music was recorded. On the American music label AMCD 74 "George Lewis band on herb Otto party 1949" you can hear the result. Not hi fidelity, but the music shines through, it's very hot, and our first opportunity to hear, "Coo Coo" Elmer Talbert.

In May 1950, Dr. Edmond Souchon arranged a recording of the George Lewis band for the New Orleans Jazz Club. The understanding was that if Dr. Souchon sold could the plate, George and the band would get the money. The recording took place on the Filiberto of music store in the barracks Street. Every day New Orleans hot and humid; cold water, soda, beer, and good thing was with lots of ice. Band leader George kept strict control of the drinks, and the resulting music is probably one of the major classical sessions of jazz in any style. It's yours to listen to "George Lewis jam session" on AMCD 104. The whole band is of course fantastic, but Elmer Talbert trumpet and his amazing vocals on "2.19 Blues" and "Palette On The Floor" desert Iceland discs are for me!

Just weeks later on 5 June 1950, "Coo Coo" of the George Lewis band made four tracks for the label "Good Time Jazz" on the trumpet. This was recorded in New Orleans and cared for by Jack Lewerke. I think this is some of the best quality in the sound and the balance is the George Lewis band. I suppose, it is a level of personal bias here, because this version New Orleans hotel was played by "Burgundy Street Blues" at my wedding with Diana Clark at the Ritz Carlton. The CD is L12005 on the good time jazz. GTCD 12005-2.

Finally shot on jazz crusade JCCD 3054 one recording of the George Lewis band with Elmer Talbert. That was a Dixieland Clambake program in New Orleans in September and October 1950. Some great George Lewis and Jim Robinson here and unfortunately our last chance, Elmer on trumpet to hear.

New Orleans Jazz specialist Geoff Gilbert, banjo player writer and journalist living in the French quarter. Born in England in 1932. He founded and directed the Gothic jazz band in 1962. After moving to Sydney, Australia in 1964, he founded the port city jazz band and began his jazz radio show on 2MBS-FM, which ran for 30 years. In 2001, Geoff in New Orleans still moved his love affair with the birthplace of jazz.

Music news as we know it today developed out of the early magazines that caught onto the growth of the popular Music industry early on in the 20th Century. Melody Maker was one of the first, introducing itself in 1926 (around the same time that the first electric guitars and amplifiers began to emerge) and targeting musicians. However, as Music became more and more popular the Music magazines of the day began to target the general public and the introduction of new, rival magazines hit the shelves.

The 1950s is when the real battle started with Melody Maker going head to head with the new kids in town, the NME, an amalgamation of previous titles Musical Express and Accordion Weekly by new owner and music promoter Maurice Kinn. Previously more interested in jazz, Melody Maker was a late convert to the advent of rock and roll, but as the sixties swung in favour of bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the ground was set for big readership figures for both publications.

The 1960s also saw the coming of more politicised voices to the publication of music news with the launch of the Berkley Barb in 1965 and Rolling Stone in 1967. Criticism of the Vietnamese war, the publication of Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the counterculture revolution of the 1960s sat next to The Beatles, Jimmy Hendrix and Jim Morrison cover stories.

This political edge to music publication didn't reach the British music news until the late 1970s with the dawning of the age of punk. However, the early 70s saw the introduction of a new rival, Sounds, which quickly became one of the three music weekly magazines to generate good levels of readership. It's edge came from its ability to see the credibility of new musical movements like Punk early on.

The 1980s would see a mixed bag of journalism in the music industry, with the hip-hop wars affecting the NME and a more populist standpoint reigning at Melody Maker until its intellectual renaissance in 1986. However, it would be the 90s that would see the story of modern British music journalism come to a head. The rise of Britpop and the introduction & success of monthly magazines Q (1986) and Mojo (1993) left Melody Maker without a clear audience or direction, and so in 2000 is ceased publication, merging with its long time rival NME, while Sounds bit the dust nearly a decade earlier in 1991.

The 2000s were left to NME and despite its ropey start to the decade, it would eventually find its footing again with bands like White Stripes, The Strokes and The Libertines. However, with readership dropping fast to just over a tenth of its hey-day 300,000 circulation, publications like NME have pumped significant investment into their online music news to compensate.

With the arrival of a new decade, it's hard to say that any of the remaining music magazines are doing anything particularly trailblazing, but then neither is the music industry as a whole. With the nation locked into the X-Factor culture, genuinely credible new music often finds it difficult to break out of the underground world that it too often resides. The death of Top of the Pops in 2006 meant that the only music to be played on terrestrial television in the UK during prime time viewing was based around one talent contest or another. With circulation figures so low, maybe it's time for the icons of music news to take back what they have spent decades helping to create.

Types of Saxophones

The Saxophone belonging to the woodwind family is a conical instrument made of brass and played with a reed mouthpiece, like the clarinet. It was patented as 14 instruments divided into two groups.

Saxophones vary in size from fifteen centimeters to two meters. Commonly available saxophones include the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, the most popular being the alto saxophone.

The alto  is medium sized, ideally suited for a beginner. It is curved with a smaller mouthpiece that does not allow much personalization of sound. The alto  is the most popular among classical composers and performers. It sometimes comes in a straight model with a slightly tipped bell. The alto is in the key of E flat. True tone alto is also available.

Soprano comes in straight or curved models. They are rather difficult to learn and therefore not advisable for beginners. Most of the new sopranos are straight or with a slight curve in the neck, bell or both. Curved sopranos were in vogue during the thirties. E-flat and B-flat soprano saxophones are available.

The tenor is larger than the alto saxophone, with a small bend in the neck. The mouthpiece, the rods and tone holes are larger. This Saxophone is commonly used in jazz music. The tenor is in the key of B flat. It has some excellent applications in classical music. However, the shape and length of the neck may cause neck damage.

The baritone is the largest of saxophones. It is available with or without an extension attached to the end of the horn. If it has an extension, it is called a low A baritone. The baritone has severe intonation problems, especially in the highest and lowest registers. The latest model baritones have an extra key that allows the player to play a low A.

Other rare types of saxophones include the C Melody, F Mezzo soprano, C soprano, Bass, Conn-O-Sax and F baritone. B-flat tenor, E-flat baritone, B-flat bass and contrabass are also available.

I ended up getting some down time at work the other day and watched the Christy Brinkley interview on the “Today Show” that I had been hoping to catch using our internet connection at the office. Christy Brinkley and her husband have been divorced for nearly three years ( I think) and it is still in the news!

I actually felt pretty bad for her. She started crying on the air. I did notice that she has definitely used Botox though because her forehead didn’t budge. I made a point to watch.

I think that she looks great! I can’t believe that she is over fifty years old. She has really taken care of herself. I just hope that when I am that age I look half that good. Looking half that good will be looking better than everyone else! Those supermodels from the eighties and early nineties have really found the fountain of youth. Have you seen Claudia Schiffer or Cindy Crawford lately. They haven’t seemed to age! I wish I knew their secret!

Jazz Coming To Disneyland

Disneyland was originally built by Walt Disney in 1954. Walt Disney was personally involved in all aspects of the park. Many changes and many years latter the park is still the same and still the great attraction to people all over the world.
